What is excel...

As we we have witnessed on the statistics Canada documents the number of Ethiopian and Eritrean new comers is growing by over 100%  annually in Alberta. However, for the new comers to attain sufficient resources and direction for a positive new life is not  strong. We have established the society to bring together volunteer professionals and community associations and faith-based organizations to one platform to contribute our part in building effective, productive and safe communities in Alberta.

We are working hard that EFYS can fill the gap between NGO's and our communities. We believe our  activities will help also all government agencies and  service providers to be effective in providing their services to our members needs. We  play a  positive role to connect different  faith base and community organizations to work together for common goal and to build a stronger, effective and productive community in Canadian political ,economical and social systems.

Excel Family and Youth Society is a community-Based not for profit organization provides free community development services for every one in need. The society focuses but not limited to families and youth of ethnic immigrants groups from Ethiopia and Eritirea.

A THANK YOU NOTE!

Good Day to all Excel Family and Youth supporters,

Our "Youth Day" and "Healthy Family Talks" event was a success. We are proud of the effort and the commitment that the young volunteers have put in to make this event successful. I wish to thank Anthony and Gifty for their hard work, creativity and time that made the day an enjoyable and educational one.

Thanks to Dr.Getachew Assefa, Associate Professor and Athena Chair for Life Cycle Assessment in Design
Faculty of Environmental Design at University of Calgary .

Dr. Getachew has discussed with the Parents as well as the youth regarding the importance of Education and how Education can lead to success.
I would like to thank Sam Effah, a 21- year old University student/ track star is one of the fastest men in Canada. He has competed in Berlin World championships and recently in Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

He thought and motivated the younger kids to stay in school and to overcome their obstacles. Thanks to Dr. Getu Biftu, water resource engineer who has discussed with parents how to assist their children to reach their dream.

I had contributed to discuss with parents how we can easily build healthy and loving relationships with children.

Thanks to the Parents and Board of Directors that have volunteered their time and skills in different situations to help out and make the Organization what it is today. Without the involvement of the Parents we wouldn't have the Excel Family and youth Society to help and prepare our children for their futures.

Being a part of our society means : helping out in the community, raising awareness of unity and success. Getting together and helping out youth and family in need when their potential is hidden and covered by unhealthy environment..

Being a Excel Family and youth Society means not thinking only about the destination but enjoying and learning from the journey.

These are some of the upcoming events:

1.We are working to organize a workshop on how to start a small business

2.How to build a healthy and lasting relationships with our partners and family.

Thanks to all of you for your involvement in being a part of our movement to change our community.

Dr Girma Lulu,Chair

Dear Reader

To all that are attending today’s youth program—congratulations!  You all have taken that first step towards uniting your great and historic culture, with that of your newly found one. Change can be tough and the welcome mat of the new may be daunting for some. Therefore, programs and opportunities for all Ethiopians and Eritreans to unite and have a common place is a blessed one. Please take hold of this opportunity and run with it because what sets us apart from other species is that we humans are driven by ambition—the key is to be focused and know who you are and what drives that ambition and for what purpose.
For example, some ambitions are specific, while others are vague. Either way, a life without ambition is a waste. An aim quote that has influenced me is, "Aim small, miss small." If you aim at a small mark you will surely hit it, but is that what we want? I think not. It doesn't matter how many say it cannot be done or how many people have tried it before; it's important to realize that whatever you're doing, it's your first attempt at it.
Therefore, to succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you so that  twenty years from now you will not be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. Richard Bach wrote, "In order to win, you must expect to win." That is the secret of success. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve your goals.

Belief has the power to transcend all hurdles, real and imaginary. You need faith, despite the stop signs, on the road ahead. Even if there are hurdles or troubles in your way, know that those are just tools by which God fashions us for better things and that in faith, there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don't.

So, in nautical terms, throw off the bowlines… Sail away from the safe harbor…Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore…dream…discover and remember that unless one undertakes more than they possibly can do, they will never do all that they can.
Remain blessed and reach hi!
Owen and Nafkot

YOUTH DAY!!!!!! Are you Ready???

Tips to manage your Finance

We have all been there: The car breaks down, just when you need it the most, or the PC has decided to just stop workTing. You can't put off these expenses, but chances are, you weren't expecting them.
Instead of being in a jam, or having to go in to debt to cover your costs, it's a good idea to set up an Emergency Fund-some savings to cover life's unexpected events.
So how much should you have for a rainy day ? Well, I recommend that you have about three months' salary or any income  in your emergency fund. If you don't currently have one, or find it difficult to save money, the key is to start small. If you set your goal to put a little money aside each month, you'll have much better chance of reaching your target.
When emergencies happen, and they will happen, it's important to have an emergency fund in place so you have access to the funds you need, quickly.

Dr. Girma Lulu

what is true success?

A true success is not measured by how much you have done or accomplished compared to what others have done or accomplished; true success is what you have done compared to what you could have done. In other words, living to the maximum is competing with yourself. It's living up to your own true standards and capabilities. Success is satisfying your own personal passion and purpose in pursuit  of  personal excellence.

We work together to educate and inspire all ethnic immigrant groups from Ethiopia and Eritrea to make healthy and positive choices for their lives in Canada. Why Start Excel Family and Youth Society ?

Welcome Everyone!
I would like to give you a brief history and some information regarding Excel Family and Youth Society.
I was doing research for over six months in 2009 in order to understand the level of success and needs within the Ethiopian and Eritrean communities in Calgary, Alberta.

My findings are shocking, our Communities hold the highest unemployment and divorce rate. This is often a topic that is not discussed among our community. Also another main focus for us is the next generation. While there is a rising number of Teen involvement in gangs and drug abuse.  Youth effectiveness and self esteem is  very low in our community. This is something we intend on changing. There is a lack of direction and support for newcomers as well. I find that new migrants to Canada struggle to settle down. I am strongly convinced that if we work together  we can  help the our community to reach to the highest level in every aspect of their lives in this free society. We are a Team of Professionals and Specialist to assist according to the needs.

I  have summarized some interesting numbers from City of Calgary and from statistics Canada web.
  • Calgary’s population is expected to reach at least 1.1 mil by 2014 and 1.23 mil by 2022, primarily due to in-migration.
  • Between 1998 and 2003 Calgary’s net migration has averaged about 13,000 people per year.
  • The number of new comers to Alberta  Ethiopian and Eritrean origins increased from 1991 to 2006 by  400%
  • In 2001 immigrants comprised 20% of Calgary’s population.
  • More than 40% of Calgary’s immigrants are from China, the Philippines ,India ,Hong Kong and Vietnam (Schellenberg,2004)
  • “One of cities characterized by increasing poverty, social exclusion and decline; the other of inclusive cities characterized by equitable and sustainable growth “  (Cities alliance, N.D)
  • In 2003, 161,000 Calgarians living in poor household, which is a  25% increase in 2002, the numbers jumped to 27% in 2005.
  • Calgary’s child poverty rate almost doubled from 11.3% in 2000 to 20.4% in 2003,which amounts to an estimated 43,000 children living in poor households (City of Calgary ,2005)
  • The immigrant groups likely to reside in poorest neighbourhoods were Black Africans, Chinese,Filipino, and Vietnamese (Smith ,2004 )
  • Some ethnic communities have higher levels of poverty than others
As we see on the statistics Canada documents the number of Ethiopian and Eritrean new comers is growing by over 100 % annually  in Alberta. However, for the new comers to attain sufficient resources and direction for a positive new life is not strong. We have established the Excel Family and Youth Society to seek change and inspire a positive change. We have brought together a team of volunteer professionals and community associations to one platform. Thus contributing our part in building effective ,productive and safe communities in Alberta and in long term in  Canada . Excel Family and Youth Society is a community-based non-profit organization, which provides free community development and integration services to everyone in need.

Please join us  to make some change in our community  and make our people successful and happy in this beautiful  country.

Residence Questions

We often hear Questions regarding moving to Canada

What is permanent residence?

When people apply for immigration to Canada, they are in fact applying for a permanent residence visa. Permanent residence is a status that allows an immigrant to legally reside and earn a living anywhere in Canada while abiding by the country’s constitutional laws.  In the U.S., such status is granted with what is known informally as Green Card.
All individuals who are not eligible to apply directly for citizenship must first apply for permanent residence.  After meeting minimum residency requirements (i.e. 3 years), individuals can then apply for citizenship, which entitles them to a Canadian passport.
Although not able to vote in elections, permanent residents enjoy many of the same privileges as Canadian citizens, including the right to education, health and social services, and protection under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

What are the different categories of immigrants?

The rules for the admission of immigrants deal with three basic categories. The family class, independent/Skilled Worker class, and the Business/Investor Category.

Family class Category: immigrants sponsored by close family members already living in Canada.

Independent Category: immigrants who qualify for certain types of jobs or have other important assets to bring to Canada. They apply on their own or have more distant elatives living in Canada.

Business Category:  Canada welcomes business immigrants who have the ability and resources to invest in or establish businesses in Canada. During 1998, business immigrants invested more than $437 million in Canada. Business immigrants, who represent nearly 8% of total immigrants, include investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed immigrants. Selection criteria vary for each category.

Investor Category:   Investors must invest a minimum amount in approved projects in Canada.  All investors must provide a minimum investment of $400,000 and have a minimum net worth of $800,000. Provinces and territories secure the investment against loss.
You may finance your investment in the Immigrant Investor Program without having to deposit the whole amount of 400,000C$ but just 120,000C$ and borrow the rest thru us via a Bank or Financial Institution. Write to us for details.
